Step-by- Step Process for Parents

"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents."

— Emilie Buchwald

Girl in Class

Step 4

  • After the meeting, the reading specialist will help parents and teachers involved with your child to implement the action plan.

  • A follow-up contact and/or meeting is scheduled after 9 weeks to discuss the growth and progress the student is making.

  • This meeting will determine if interventions are continued, changed, or stopped.

Step 1

  • Parent contacts classroom teacher to discuss academic difficulties.

  • If the parent feels there has not been improvement within 2 weeks, the parent can speak with the reading specialist about their academic concerns to discuss ideas and problem- solve.

  • Begin collecting data that you feel would be helpful.  For example: any outside testing, written work, time spent on homework (log), and your observations.

Step 2

  • If there are no academic improvements after speaking to the classroom teacher and trying the teacher's suggestions for at least two weeks, then complete the form which can be found under the "Parent Forms" tab called "Parent Questionaire".

  • Once this is completed and submitted, a meeting with the classroom teacher and Reading Specialist will be scheduled.

Step 3

  • On the meeting day with the classroom teacher and Reading Specialist, bring all documentation/data you have collected.

  • During the meeting, ideas will be discussed and an action plan will be created for your child.

  • At this meeting, a follow-up meeting will be scheduled for further planning, implementation, or progress monitoring results after 9 weeks.
